A great way for Hercule Poirot and his friend Hastings to be introduced, although it was not my first Poirot book by Agatha Christie. Always kept you thinking of what was going to happen or come forward, right up until the last paragraph, literally.

Good, light reading that leaves you with a warm heart and happy feelings. The books take place in North Dakota. People in each book are discussed in other books; best to read in order but still good if read out of order. Another fine selection from Lauraine Snelling.

A Separate Peace

This was recommended to me rather enthusiastically by some of my students back in January, and while I read it slowly alongside a few other books, the weight of it settled on me as I considered how big global events change everything, even (or perhaps especially?) the day-to-day operation of schools. The global event in this novel is World War II, but the flashback-style narrative is about how a young man comes to understand the circumstances of major events of his youth. It was terrific, and I book I'll remember reading for sure.

Reading a novel about a pandemic in the middle of a pandemic might seem reckless, but Tremblay's book is a compelling read, and the two main characters, Ramola and Natalie, have a long-term relationship that drives the book. And then there's Natalie's baby, for she is very pregnant when she contacts her doctor friend, Rams, and the protection of the baby becomes a prime focus of a scary book.
